Overview

You’ve Googled your business or your name and you don’t like what you see.

Your first thought is, “I need to get this removed – fast.”

There’s a sense of urgency because if you can see it, so can everyone else who’s looking you up on the internet.

That’s the reason why I’ve written this guide.

I’m going to provide you with the most practical tried and true methods for removing Google search results, including our guaranteed removal services, which are among the least expensive and most reliable of all reputation management companies.

#1 Contact the author or website owner directly

Contacting the author or website owner directly often yields the fastest results, enabling the content’s removal from the source.

If you can’t readily locate the author or owner, there are two ways you might find it.

  1. Visit Whois.com >> enter the domain name in the top search bar >> under the Registrant Contact, check for name, organization, address, and email. If the name is listed as “Registration Private,” the domain is registered privately. Move on to #2 below.
  2. Visit Google.com and search for the full domain name plus the word “owner” >> This might lead you to a contact page, social media, or other online mention of who the owner is.

If both methods fail, post your question on popular Q&A forums like Reddit or Quora.

Just ask, “Does anyone know who owns (website)?” and see if you get a response.

If you’ve tried everything and still can’t find out who owns the website, move on to step 2, direct removal from Google.

If you found the author or owner, proceed per below.

Author / Journalists

Before reaching out to the author, especially in the case of journalists, consider their motivations for writing the article.

Journalists may have different incentives, such as driving clicks and ad revenue, or they may not be inclined to remove or modify the content, even if it’s harming your reputation.

Here are the risks of reaching out to editors, journalists, and authors, especially for online newspapers.

  • Amplification: They may choose to amplify the negative content on social media or create a follow-up story, which could further damage your reputation.
  • Legal Ramifications: If the journalist perceives your request as an attempt to suppress freedom of speech or if they feel threatened by legal action, they may escalate the situation.

If you’ve considered the risks and want to take a shot, here are two proven templates you can use.One you’ve

Subject: Request for Content Removal from [Website Name]

Dear [Author’s Name],

I hope this email finds you well. I recently came across [specific content], which has been affecting my online reputation. I understand that this may have been an oversight, and I am reaching out to kindly request its removal or modification from your website.

The presence of this content has had [negative impact], and I would greatly appreciate your assistance in resolving this matter. Please let me know if you require any further information from my end to facilitate the process.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards,
[Your Name]

If you get a response, you have three routes you can follow that would benefit you:

  1. Complete removal of content. This is your best possible outcome, but not likely in most cases.
  2. Modification of content. If you can present facts or valid reasons, the author may agree to modify the content. The biggest things to aim for here are:
    • Removal of your name/business from the title of the article – it will not rank as high
    • Removal of your name/business from the content of the article – it probably will not rank as high
    • Modification of content – could cast you in a more positive light
  3. Add a NOINDEX tab to the page. If they will add a noindex tag to the page, it will fall out of Google search results in a couple weeks. The only way people can find it is if they have the actual link. This can be a win-win because it allows the website owner to keep the content intact on their site and it helps you because the link is removed from search engines.

#2 Direct removal from Google

If you’ve already gotten a website owner to remove or change content about you on their site and it is still showing up in search results, you can use the the refresh outdated content tool to speed up it’s removal.

You can also use this tool even if the third party website content still exists, but you feel it violates Google’s personal content and product policies.

Content violations Google may remove include those related to pornography, personally identifiable information and explicit images of minors under 18.

Visit this link or view the screenshot below for a complete list.

Here are the steps to speed the refreshing of search results using Google’s refresh outdated content tool.

Step 1: First, tap “New Request.”

Step 2: Choose the reason for the request.

I recommend selecting the first option, “To refresh Google’s outdated result for a webpage that has changed.”

This is a nice catchall that covers both deleted web pages and modified web pages.

#3 Legal options for removing content

I’m not a lawyer, but I did a Google search for the topic “remove Google search results,” and found the top two posts by law firms discussing the subject.

I reviewed both posts in their entirety and here are the main points emphasized by both attorneys.

  1. Law firms generally specialize in removing content which is deemed “defamatory” and this process involves obtaining a court order and filing it with Google in hopes that the search engine giant will pull it from search results.
  2. It can be a complex, time consuming, and costly process without the guarantee of removal.

Feel free to speak with an attorney and compare the price and potential outcome to our guarantee: If we can’t remove it, you don’t pay.

With a lawyer, you’re going to pay for their time regardless of outcome.

FAQ

How do I permanently delete search results?

The best way to remove info from the internet is to get the website owner to take it down. If you’re unable to do that, you can use Google’s removal tool, explore legal options, or hire a reputation management agency to help you.

How do I block websites from Google search results?

You can’t really block an entire website unless you own it or you can convince the owner to de-index the entire site from web results. The more likely option is that you can get a website owner to block a single page on their site which is effecting your online reputation.
