What Is Houzz?

According to Wikipedia, Houzz was founded in 2009 and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

The company provides home renovation tips and contractors.

It is similar to other well known contractor websites such as:

  • Thumbtack
  • HomeAdvisor
  • Yelp
  • Angi

The website’s main navigation as of November 2025 is neatly divided into four main areas:

#1 Software

For contractors, Houzz Pro i s a monthly subscription service that offers tools to grow and manage your business.

It streamlines everything from lead generation and client communication to estimates, invoices, and scheduling.

You also get built-in marketing and analytics—all designed to help you stand out from competitors.

#2 Find Professionals

For homeowners, their website provides design inspiration, shopping, and hiring into one platform.

You can browse millions of renovation photos, discover fresh ideas, and find trusted contractors in your area.

As you can see in the screenshot, a wide variety of design, remodeling, renovation, outdoor, and services contractors are available in a single database.

#3 Ideas

The Ideas portion of the website is a mixture of ideas and contractors.

This portion of the site is consumer-focused and aims to help connect you with a home improvement specialist.

With so many pictures, it’s a nice interface for getting inspiration for how to improve your house and find a professional to do the work.

Whether you want a custom basketball court built or simply a kitchen remodel, the Ideas part of the site is the ticket to getting the job done.

#4 Shop

When you click on the “shop” link of the website, you’ll be taken to the e-commerce website: shophouzz.com.

On this site, you can buy home decor directly from Houzz and it’s affiliates.

At shophouzz.com, everything from furniture to lighting and baby cribs to christmas trees is available for purchase.

Combine all of this together, and you can see that Houzz.com is a 1-stop marketplace for everything related to home improvement.

Can Houzz Reviews Be Trusted?

No. And here are two reasons why not.

#1 No Poorly Rated Businesses (~1,900 checked)

I browsed nearly 1,500 painting contractors and over 400 roofing contractors nationwide.

These are two fields with notoriously poor service.

And yet, I couldn’t find a single business profile with a rating below 4.5—that seems odd to me.

#2 Easy To Add “MadeUp” Reviews

Consumers who submit contractor reviews to Houzz are required to provide their email address as verification.

This seems like a pretty thin way of verifying the person is real—it’s pretty easy to create a email account and use it for posting reviews.

I spoke with contractors on Fiverr who confirmed that they’ve been paid to publish 5-Star reviews.

I saw proof of this and therefore, I wouldn’t trust Houzz ratings.

If all it takes to publish a 5-star review is an email account, than it would be pretty easy to game the system.

Does Houzz Auto-Populate My Business Information?
