How Long Do Mugshots Stay On The Internet?

Mugshots can appear on the web forever.

Like other online content, mugshot images are a permanent record that never go away unless action is taken against them.

We recommend immediate removal of mugshots as you notice them because the longer they’re online, the greater the chances that other mugshot websites will pick them up and post them.

And while Google doesn’t show mugshot images as often as it used to, these unflattering photos can still be found.

One mugshot photo can wreck a career or prevent you from being hired.

At the least, mugshot images create questions you have to answer for a part of your life you’re probably ready to move on from or keep private, especially in the case of non-violent crimes such as DUI or theft.

Why Are Some Mugshots Not Online?

There are two main reasons why some mugshots are not online.

  1. Newspapers and/or law enforcement have not posted it. Since many mugshots first appear in local newspapers, if the news outlet opts to not make a story out of the arrest or case, it’s likely that the mugshot will not appear online. Likewise, even though mugshots are public record in most states, it’s not mandatory that the jurisdiction posts every single mugshot. In fact, some states have made laws prohibiting the release of mugshots until the arrestee is proven guilty. In Oregon, for example, a 2021 law prevents mugshot photos from being released except under certain circumstances.
  2. The mugshot has already been removed by legal means or other methods.

Google Image Removal Request

You can request that Google remove an image from it’s search engine, but it’s unlikely to be successful in the case of a mugshot.

As Google recommends, your first step should be to contact the website directly and ask that the image be removed.

I’m guessing you’ve already tried that, otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading this post.

Most websites aren’t going to take down your mugshot just because you asked.

Of course, if an image has already been deleted, you can ask Google to remove the image from its search index.

This would generally happen within a couple weeks normally, but you can expedite the process by following these steps.

Google does have other provisions in place under which it will remove images, but these will probably not help you get a mugshot removed.

Mugshot Removal Costs

Mugshot image removal costs less than you might think.

A typical removal of one image from one website usually costs hundreds of dollars, not thousands.

If you’d like an exact cost, we’re probably going to be the most affordable – please reach out for a quote.

Next Steps

Getting arrested can be devastating.

Online mugshots add to the distress by making your image public for all to see when they search for you on Google.

The quicker you take action, the better, to help keep the image from appearing on multiple sites.
